Destinations and Activities
As quiet and secluded as the Lake James region feels, you’re never very far away from the most popular destinations in Western North Carolina. And, daily conveniences are just a short drive away.
For groceries, supplies and restaurants, Morganton is only 15 miles to the east and Marion is only 15 miles to the west. Additionally, Grace Hospital in Morganton is one of the region’s premier medical facilities.
Asheville consistently ranks as one of the country’s best places to live. Just 45 minutes from Lake James, Asheville is famous for its colorful arts scene, cultural attractions, fine dining and eclectic shopping. Points of interest include the Biltmore Estate, Grove Park Inn and the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
Plan a visit to Black Mountain and its historic downtown populated with gift shops, art galleries, music venues and craft stores with live demonstrations. The town is also near Montreat College – a four-year liberal arts school with a beautiful campus.
If you’re looking for a great drive, follow the breathtaking Diamondback route on NC 226A to Little Switzerland, a mountain colony at 3,200 feet known for gem mining. While you’re there, shop for arts and crafts and visit the Orchard at Altapass.
